As it is described in the book Post-Ilusiones, the Urbe & Arte exhibit intended to “show expressions dedicated to the creation of contemporary art, which would gather a selection of works made in Peru in visual arts, architecture and music between 1980 and 2005”. The art from Lima was collected because our capital city is the setting of major significance when it comes to art production in the period that was considered. In those years, artists diversified their expression tools, displaying new and radical perspectives in many cases. Moreover, that period of time was marked by the intense domestic conflicts, therefore the results were especially transcendent. “What seems extremely interesting to me in this exhibit”, explained Jorge Villacorta, “is that it offers the possibility to look at creation as a part of a cultural history”.
Contrary to what had traditionally been done, the exhibit was not organized chronologically, but rather on the basis of ten conceptual themes (and a Presentation): Non-Objectualism; Expressive Figurative and Surrealism; Neo-Baroque; Expressive Abstract and Geometrical; Non-Objectualism of the 1980s and 1990s; Self portraits and Rites of Passage; Citizenship, City and Index Object; Organic and “Materic” Material Allegories; New Myths; Hybrid Narrative and New Means, Mechanism and Simulation; Non-Objectualism and Landscape. It is not about a rigid division, for there are artists who may be considered for more than one category. These were the participant artists.
